Fever Treatment

When to Visit for a Fever

Fevers are one of the most common indications that something in the body is wrong; the body’s temperature rises as it tries to fight off viral or bacterial infections.

In most cases, breaking a fever boils down to getting plenty of bed rest, staying hydrated, and taking Tylenol or Motrin (depending on age).

Age plays a factor in what should be classified as a fever. Here is a breakdown and what to look for:

Infants & Toddlers
  • Up to 3 months: 100.4°F (See a doctor even if no other symptoms are present)
  • 3-6 Months: 102°F (See a doctor if the fever is accompanied by other symptoms or goes above this temperature)
  • 6 Months-2 Years: over 102°F (Ask your doctor about taking OTC medications and visit a doctor if the fever persists)
Young Children & Adolescents
  • 2-17 Years: over 102°F (Children these ages generally do not need medication to help reduce a fever, but it may help to combat aches/pains. Visit a doctor if the fever rises above this temperature)
